Don't throw or give away your cedar chests quite yet! The cedar chests and closets do work great; but only because they are air tight, since the gasket on the lid and joints are very snug. Therefore, if your cedar chest has a loose seal, it stands to reason you will not be adequately protected from any insects.

Other Tips:
Do not finish cedar with varnish, it will reduce the cedar smell.
To restore the cedar scent, just sand the surfaces lightly with 150-grit sandpaper.
Do not dry chests and closets over 80 degrees F. This will greatly reduce or destroy the cedar odor permanently.

by Jim Haverlock, President Making a difference, especially in Uganda, is a top priority of mine. Why? When I was five (5) years old, my deepest desire was to be a missionary and go to Africa to help the poorest of the poor. That desire continued through my young years and at age 14 I headed off to Seminary to study, with this same goal in mind. Then came marriage, eight children, 18 grand children and my dream still did not die. Then, seven plus years ago fate kind of pushed Africa on me, in a kind and gentle way. With this gentle push came first hand knowledge of the suffering that eighty (80) percent of the world's population lives with each day of their life. The words of the young and old of having absolutely no hope, no encouragement, one small meal a day, searching for water, no electricity, no education to enable them a chance to get out of the poverty they are stuck in. It was then that full reality set in on how easy we have life in most of the USA, the UK and other nations. We roll out of a comfortable well made bed, flip a switch and have instant light; go to the kitchen, turn a faucet and have either hot or cold running water; cook a meal on an electric, or gas range; our closets are full of clothing and shoes; a car(s) parked in our garage or drive; a well built home to shelter us; a job; money to spend, and the list continues. Compare that to - no bed but sleeping on dirt floors; no electricity; no kitchen or range; no water unless we trek miles and carry it in jerry cans; chop down trees and chop that up to cook a one small day's meal; a grass/mud one room hut to call shelter for a family; no clothing, or just one outfit that is badly worn, no shoes; no car or other transport except your own feet; no job or chance of getting one beyond carrying water for someone else; and then you realize why they have no hope, no dreams. If we each took just one month to live in their bodies, we would all be so willing to help each other. This has been my dreams, or nightmares. It was time to wake up and help my fellow man. It is actually up to all of us to share with those less fortunate - give considerable thought to that fact, and the fact that we "can" make the world a better place. Presently (and in past years) Sponsoring and paying tuition for several young people, who truly desire an education so they in turn can help their families and communities, has blessed my life immensely. So much so that I talked with several caring people and decided to put together a non-profit, charitable, organization and obtain the IRS designation of 501C-3 - which enables anyone making a donation to use that amount on their tax returns. The intention was (and is) to provide more poor children from single parent homes, those who have no hope or future to look forward to, to get an education and enable themselves to be productive, caring, compassionate citizens. The approval came in December 2007 after many months of research, working through the corporation paperwork and status, then applying for the 501C-3 approval. There are eight (8) board members and you can see their individual profiles by using this "Directors" link. My own profile is James Haverlock. In February 2006 I also took on the responsibility of raising funds to implement clean and safe water wells for a small college (540 students) and 3 surrounding villages. This project is now complete and the students now have 2-3 hours more each day for study. They had to each carry water (not even clean or safe, but disease borne bacteria invested) in jerry cans over a distance of 2.5 miles one way, daily, for drinking, cooking and bathing. Through my work during these past years, it was made known that many other people would love to help those less fortunate, but they also said they did not know how, or where to start. (Many friends, acquaintences, and people met in airports, bus stations, cafes or on the street, have said this similar thing) This was a huge part of the decision to form a non-profit organization that others could be a part of, in their own way, and at their own level of giving. I mentioned earlier about the blessings, or rewards, I have received from helping. So you understand what I mean - I will explain just a little. Four (4) children I have, and am, helping in Uganda, lost their father to Malaria at a tender young age. This left an uneducated mother to raise them on her own. She made grass mats to sell, the only thing she knew how to do, and worked a small garden for food. She, along with the 4 children, lost all hope, all dreams for ever moving forward. Then I came along and got the oldest into school where she has excelled after being made fun of because she had no shoes, one outfit to wear. But as the other kids learned how smart she was, they would seek her out to help them. This young woman who had no confidence, no self-worth, now has courage, strength, loads of confidence and continues to grow and excel. She has already been providing much help to her own family, to her community, to others. She is caring, giving, and focused now with a goal of being a nurse. For the first time in her life she is able to dream big, to set and reach goals, to have many friends. Then she lost her mother in May of this year, 2008. I am her remaining family. She and her siblings have, and do call me Daddy, and come to me with questions, concerns, seeking advice on every facet of life, including "boys" and how to handle them. These kids have blessed my life, rewarded me far beyond the few dollars I have provided, the little encouragement I have given. They have taught me so much about - giving, loving, caring, sharing, living life - yes, I consider what they give me as the richest reward one could have in this lifetime. Being a part of Compassion Care Foundation is the culmination of a lifelong dream of providing a way to give hope and care to at least a few of the 80 per cent of the world's population that lives on less then one dollar per day. A vehicle for those who want to help but don't know how or where to begin. A way to provide hope, encouragement, love, sharing and caring to more of these absolutely marvelous people who continue to be a huge part of me. And now, hopefully, you, too. I ask you to ... by Jim Haverlock, President Making a difference, especially in Uganda, is a top priority of mine. Why? When I was five (5) years old, my deepest desire was to be a missionary and go to Africa to help the poorest of the poor. That desire continued through my young years and at age 14 I headed off to Seminary to study, with this same goal in mind. Then came marriage, eight children, 18 grand children and my dream still did not die. Then, seven plus years ago fate kind of pushed Africa on me, in a kind and gentle way. With this gentle push came first hand knowledge of the suffering that eighty (80) percent of the world's population lives with each day of their life. The words of the young and old of having absolutely no hope, no encouragement, one small meal a day, searching for water, no electricity, no education to enable them a chance to get out of the poverty they are stuck in. It was then that full reality set in on how easy we have life in most of the USA, the UK and other nations. We roll out of a comfortable well made bed, flip a switch and have instant light; go to the kitchen, turn a faucet and have either hot or cold running water; cook a meal on an electric, or gas range; our closets are full of clothing and shoes; a car(s) parked in our garage or drive; a well built home to shelter us; a job; money to spend, and the list continues. Compare that to - no bed but sleeping on dirt floors; no electricity; no kitchen or range; no water unless we trek miles and carry it in jerry cans; chop down trees and chop that up to cook a one small day's meal; a grass/mud one room hut to call shelter for a family; no clothing, or just one outfit that is badly worn, no shoes; no car or other transport except your own feet; no job or chance of getting one beyond carrying water for someone else; and then you realize why they have no hope, no dreams. If we each took just one month to live in their bodies, we would all be so willing to help each other. This has been my dreams, or nightmares. It was time to wake up and help my fellow man. It is actually up to all of us to share with those less fortunate - give considerable thought to that fact, and the fact that we "can" make the world a better place. Presently (and in past years) Sponsoring and paying tuition for several young people, who truly desire an education so they in turn can help their families and communities, has blessed my life immensely. So much so that I talked with several caring people and decided to put together a non-profit, charitable, organization and obtain the IRS designation of 501C-3 - which enables anyone making a donation to use that amount on their tax returns. The intention was (and is) to provide more poor children from single parent homes, those who have no hope or future to look forward to, to get an education and enable themselves to be productive, caring, compassionate citizens. The approval came in December 2007 after many months of research, working through the corporation paperwork and status, then applying for the 501C-3 approval. There are eight (8) board members and you can see their individual profiles by using this "Directors" link. My own profile is James Haverlock. In February 2006 I also took on the responsibility of raising funds to implement clean and safe water wells for a small college (540 students) and 3 surrounding villages. This project is now complete and the students now have 2-3 hours more each day for study. They had to each carry water (not even clean or safe, but disease borne bacteria invested) in jerry cans over a distance of 2.5 miles one way, daily, for drinking, cooking and bathing. Through my work during these past years, it was made known that many other people would love to help those less fortunate, but they also said they did not know how, or where to start. (Many friends, acquaintences, and people met in airports, bus stations, cafes or on the street, have said this similar thing) This was a huge part of the decision to form a non-profit organization that others could be a part of, in their own way, and at their own level of giving. I mentioned earlier about the blessings, or rewards, I have received from helping. So you understand what I mean - I will explain just a little. Four (4) children I have, and am, helping in Uganda, lost their father to Malaria at a tender young age. This left an uneducated mother to raise them on her own. She made grass mats to sell, the only thing she knew how to do, and worked a small garden for food. She, along with the 4 children, lost all hope, all dreams for ever moving forward. Then I came along and got the oldest into school where she has excelled after being made fun of because she had no shoes, one outfit to wear. But as the other kids learned how smart she was, they would seek her out to help them. This young woman who had no confidence, no self-worth, now has courage, strength, loads of confidence and continues to grow and excel. She has already been providing much help to her own family, to her community, to others. She is caring, giving, and focused now with a goal of being a nurse. For the first time in her life she is able to dream big, to set and reach goals, to have many friends. Then she lost her mother in May 2008. I am her remaining family. She and her siblings have, and do call me Daddy, and come to me with questions, concerns, seeking advice on every facet of life, including "boys" and how to handle them. These kids have blessed my life, rewarded me far beyond the few dollars I have provided, the little encouragement I have given. They have taught me so much about - giving, loving, caring, sharing, living life - yes, I consider what they give me as the richest reward one could have in this lifetime. Being a part of Compassion Care Foundation is the culmination of a lifelong dream of providing a way to give hope and care to at least a few of the 80 per cent of the world's population that lives on less then one dollar per day. But the experts agree on a few wood-care basics. Your mother was right: DUST FREQUENTLY. DO NOT USE A FEATHER DUSTER because it will simply move dust around, flinging it into the air. Feather dusters can't be washed, and a quill could scratch the wood surface if a feather breaks off. Dust is abrasive so infrequent or improper dusting can create a worn, dull surface over the years. Dust can accumulate in carving, cracks and grooves and make wood look dark and unattractive. This dusty buildup eventually becomes hard to remove. BE VERY CAREFUL USING WATER to clean wood. Wood should never get wet or soaked. Water can cause swelling, warping or staining when it penetrates a finish. Use coasters, pads, cloths or runners to protect against spills and water rings. YOU THINK YOU KNOW HOW TO DUST? Here are some detailed tips from the experts. Use a clean, washable cloth made of soft, lint-free cotton. The best choices include an old T- shirt, diaper, cheesecloth, dish towel, piece of flannel, or chamois. The cloth should have no snaps, buttons, zippers or thick seams that could scratch furniture surfaces. Do not use a cloth that has hanging threads or unraveling edges. These could catch on wood slivers, molding, knobs or other loose pieces. DRY DUSTING VERSUS DAMP DUSTING. Many experts believe that dusting with a dry cloth is abrasive and will ultimately dull the finish. A dry cloth will not really remove dust, they say. These experts typically recommend sprinkling a few drops of water onto the dusting cloth. The trick is to moisten the cloth just enough to make dust adhere to it. The cloth should not be so damp that it wets the wood. If you can see any trace of water on the wood after you wipe, your cloth is too damp. Some conservators recommend using distilled water for heirlooms or antiques. You might want to use a spray-on dusting aid or polish. If so, consider whether you want to apply silicone oil to your finishes. This type of oil is used in most commercial furniture sprays and polishes. To find out if your product contains silicone oil, consult the label or call the manufacturer. FOLLOW THE GRAIN. Wipe off dust using gentle, oval motions along the grain of the wood. Turn or fold the cloth as soon as dirt is visible on any section. Keep a pile of clean cloths handy so you don't move dust and dirt from one spot to another. Lift, don't slide, lamps and objects to dust under and around them. Avoid soiling adjoining upholstery. Launder soiled dusting cloths immediately. The ARTEMISININ Project which is dedicated to aid those afflicted with malaria by buying and disseminating the anti-malarial drug artemesinin. Artemesinin is a plant-derived compound that has been proven effective in combating malaria. We at Compassion Care want to make it available to those who
cannot travel or afford medical care.

Compassion Care offers sponsorship programs that provide safe, nurturing schools for children whose families have little or no economic means, as well as medical care for them and their families. In rural villages, Compassion Care provides villagers with medical and dental care, educational facilities for
children, food for the hungry, and scholarships for those wishing to attend a university, Trade School, or other institute of higher learning.

At Compassion Care healing is viewed as a process of growth and self-empowerment predicated on nurturing the individual, which necessarily includes love, unconditional acceptance, unbridled encouragement and ceaseless prayer. In addition Compassion Care is committed to providing safe, hygenic water and a nutritious meal to those who have not eaten; creating opportunities for bright, underprivileged
youngsters to attend school; making sure clothes and shoes are made available to children who have none.

Compassion-Care is also about binding up the deep wounds of want by providing shelter for those who lack a roof over their heads, and teaching indigenous peoples the skills necessary to support themselves and even generate a decent income.

IN THE TRENCHES – COMPASSION CARE’S DIRECTORS:

Lyn Darnall is employed as a statistician at both SRI (San Clemente, CA) and the University of California-Irvine. She is the author of many papers and at least one book. Lyn is one of those giving souls who looks out after others and beats the drum constantly for worthy causes.

Jim Haverlock is owner of 1shop4u.com, one of the Internet’s busiest online home furnishings shopping center, and has 8 children, a foster son, 18 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren (A fact that has made him, in the words of Compassion Care co-director Dr. Anthony Payne, “A Darwinian success story few can top”) Jim is former President of the Chamber United Way, as well as a mover and a shaker in his local Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, and St. Joseph’s Church (950 family church with its own grade school).

Jim's story is movingly told in his much acclaimed autobiography, “Challenging the Dragon.” As one whose life has been lived at least partially in the “shadowlands,” Jim has a heart for those who are challenged physically, materially and in terms of lack of opportunity for self-improvement.

Teddy Namagembe (Kampala, Uganda, Africa) is an accountant, though to become so she had to surmount many dire challenges including poverty to obtain an education and help her family and others. Teddy has a great desire to help her people, especially the very poor. Among her inspired ideas are establishment of a FREE School in remote Uganda, as well as making available universal access to a basic education, as well as spiritual guidance, food, clothing and improved living conditions for the poorest of the poor.

Dr. Anthony G. Payne is a biological theorist and Director of Invention & Development at Weller Health Institute (California), author of 3 books and numerous articles and papers, as well as the creative force behind numerous novel treatment approaches for various kinds of cancer, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), and more. Dr. Payne spends a great deal of his time at work and home laboring away on devices, regimens and hypotheses that are geared to alleviate suffering and turn the tables on many intractable conditions and
some incurable diseases. Dr. Payne and his Japanese wife, Sachi, live in sunny southern California.

Pamela Purtell is employed with 1shop4u.com (Twisp WA) and is a single mom with 3 children. Pam has been and is involved in helping young people including school programs. She genuinely cares about people, health issues and education and is an all-around giving person.

Rebekah Trevino is employed with Microsoft Corporation headquarters (Renton WA) and is married to Eric. She is a very compassionate, caring young woman who gives of herself to help others while cheering on others to do likewise.

Arthur Eugene Westlund is owner of the Winthrop Inn (Winthrop, WA.) Mr. Westlund has been helping the poor for many years, especially young people, and is deeply involved in providing spiritual succor to members of his church, community and family.

Mary Jane Westlund is an accountant, housewife, and mother of four who cares very much about people, and in this vein helps many locally, as well as in Mexico and Africa. Mrs. Westlund does a great deal for those in need but like all our directors has a big desire to bring bigger things to pass to ease their plight
